So we sold our house in England and decided to move up to our spiritual home in the Trossachs. In the few months between homes, we’re working from a few holiday cottages and itching to get up some hills.

A week off in between gave us that opportunity and, with the weather being pretty changeable, we decided to go for just the single Munro walk of Maol Chean-dearg.

It was a 4km almost flat walk to begin with as we made our way to Coire Fionnaraich, one of the most accessible bothies I’ve come across. From there it’s a pretty boggy section before turning to climb round the side and up Maol Chean-dearg.

I struggled quite a bit to begin with, feeling like I had no juice in the legs, but we gradually made our way up to a lochan and the incredible sight of An Ruadh-stac, shortly before the final, and fun, climb up the boulder field to the summit. Here we were rewarded with views of Beinn Damh, Liathach and the rest of the huge mountains of Torridon just as the sun came out.

A great day in the hills.
